Grimsell’s Seed Company has been a fixture in downtown Harlingen for generations. In the 1970s E. D. Giffen retired and management of Grimsell’s passed to his son, Donald E. Giffen. Donnie was the face of Grimsell’s for almost 40 years. It was he who acquired the properties on either side of the original building and added in a nursery to supplement the seed business. Today, it is Donnie’s sister, Carol Mayfield, who oversees the business with a very capable team of employees who manage the day-to-day operations. These include Jerry Abbot, George Luna, Martin Villanueva, and Basilio Torres. Basilio has been with Grimsell’s 47 years and George about 30 years. Grimsell’s continues to sell feed and seed the old-fashioned way, offering garden seeds, vegetable seeds, and some flower seeds by the ounce, as well as bird seed, fertilizers, and minerals by the pound, They stock a broad selection of insecticides and fungicides, potting soils and planting mixes blended for the Valley, bedding plants, garden plants, shade trees, vegetables, herbs, hanging baskets, and more. The nursery is well-known for the huge variety of roses they stock each winter (2000 plants) and, in the summer, a huge variety of 500-800 fruit trees, vines and grapes. Over the years Grimsell’s has grown and expanded from their primary building at 213 W. Monroe. The nursery now occupies half a city block (300’x140’). This includes the 1921 Templeton building on the west end of the block and a large garden area on the west end, where the popular Arcadia Theatre once stood. Buried beneath the grass, according to local legend, are seats and other remnants of the theatre, which was destroyed by fire in 1970. Today the inviting area designated at the Arcadia Gardens boasts palms and plants of all types, the tallest flagpole in South Texas (125’) and two recently-acquired military macaws named RK and Dia, in honor of the old theatre.  Grimsell’s other avian residents include a double yellow parrot named Paco, two Eurasian collared doves, and two or three dozen parakeets. An open air structure next to Arcadia Gardens in the remnants of the structure that once housed popular downtown businesses including City News & Drug and the City Barber Shop. And, after losing the roof to a fire in 2006, and the front façade to a windstorm in 2009, the front room of the original building at 213 W. Monroe was reworked into a fenced courtyard, following a design provided by architects with the Texas Main Street Program.

Canterbury Gardens Retirement Living

Canterbury Gardens Retirement Living

tel. 956-428-4118

1002 King Arthur Court, Harlingen, TX 78550

Canterbury Gardens offers the full continuum of senior living options – from retirement and assisted living through memory care – all on one lovely two-acre campus in a rural area of Harlingen, Texas. Four roads meander through our property, with our three-story independent apartment community situated a short distance from our assisted living community in a more secluded section of campus. A full wing of our assisted living community is dedicated to our memory care residents. With three communities all located on one campus, residents have the security of knowing they can remain right here should their needs change over time. We can facilitate moves throughout our campus with very little disruption. Because residents can remain in the environment that supports them best, they don’t have to change what’s most important: their friendships and familiar surroundings. Strong, Caring Professional RelationshipsWhatever healthcare service a resident may need is within minutes from our community – not surprising, considering Harlingen has been dubbed the “Health Care Center of the Rio Grande Valley.” So residents can feel safe knowing some of the state’s best medical facilities are all within an easy drive. In addition, home health and rehabilitation providers from the immediate area come into our community, offering such services as physical and occupational therapy here in the comfort of the resident’s own home or in one of our many common areas. Hospice is also always welcome. As necessary, we can take residents to various rehabilitation facilities in the area should they require more intensive therapy. A few physicians make house calls – and local home health agencies occasionally sponsor health fairs at our community, offering a variety of free screenings to our residents. Our StaffOur well-rounded and dedicated staff, from our two Executive Directors to our licensed nurse and Memory Care director, have been here for several years. The reason for such longevity is simple. Our staff loves what they do! Our families often tell us how much they appreciate our devotion to their loved ones. They clearly see that we enjoy coming to work and most importantly, that we put residents first. Even our community pets are treated with great care. One resident calls us “Canterbury Kennels” because we are so pet-friendly. We know how important pets are to our residents and believe that pets – especially dogs and cats – offer the best therapy. So even if a resident is unable to walk his or her dog, we’ll step in and provide the care required so that their beloved pet can remain here with them, in their own homes. Kindness, commitment, compassion and experience are the hallmarks of our devoted staff!
